Assign parent conference slots around each family's limits
Practice: Setting limits and rules. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
You teach 3rd grade and have five families to fit into 15-minute conference slots on Thursday afternoon. You want exactly 5 numbered lines in time order, each as time - family, under 35 words, plain text. Every family must get a slot that fits the limits they gave you, including one family's updated note. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Missing the updated note. Garcia's first note says 'after 4:00', so the AI may put them at 4:15. Try: Add: "Garcia can only do 4:00 now."
- Not stating the limits. The AI assigns families in list order. Try: Add: "Fit each family's limits: Thompson 3:30, Patel last, Brooks before 4:30."
- Not giving the line shape. The AI writes a paragraph or table. Try: Add: "Each line: time - family."
- Letting the AI add extras. The AI adds the reports and heater reminders. Try: Add: "Only the 5 slots. Plain text, numbered."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 35 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "each line under 8 words."
What a strong prompt includes
- Says how many lines
- Uses the update
- States the limits
- Shows the line shape
- Sets a word limit
