Write a LinkedIn connection note with no sales pitch
- For Sales and customer success
- You practice Setting limits and rules
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Beginner
About this exercise
You saw Imani Brooks speak on a panel about returns fraud and want to connect on LinkedIn. Connection notes are capped, so keep it under 45 words. Mention her panel point about "wardrobing", don't pitch your product or ask for a meeting, and sign it "Marcus". Plain text. Start the note with "Hi Imani,".
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Sneaking in a pitch. The AI sees your product notes and works them in, which makes people decline the request. Try: Add: "No pitch: don't mention my product, results or a meeting."
- Generic compliments. "Loved your talk!" is what the AI writes when you don't name the point that stuck with you. Try: Add: "Mention her point about wardrobing."
- No sign-off or a full one. The AI either skips the name or adds a title and company. Try: Add: "Sign it: Marcus"
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs long when you only give a total like 45 words. Try: Cap each part instead, like "2 sentences, each under 15 words," so the total lands well under 45.
- Forgetting it's plain text. AI adds bold labels and headings, which show up as stray symbols in a LinkedIn note. Try: Add: "Plain text only. No bold, no headings."
What a strong prompt includes
