Turn a market-size question into searches you can trust
- For Product managers
- You practice Giving the right context
- Time about 5 minutes
About this exercise
Your VP asked "how big is the pet tech market?", but you only need US households with a cat or dog that might buy a smart feeder, using 2025 or 2026 figures. Write exactly 4 numbered lines: 3 search queries for an AI search tool, each under 20 words, then a line starting Exclude: that rules out vendor press releases and paywalled report teasers. Plain text, under 90 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Searching the VP's words. "Pet tech market size" brings back global hype numbers from companies selling something. Try: Say what you need: "US households with a cat or dog, 2025 or 2026."
- Not listing what the deck needs. The AI writes three versions of the same market-size query. Try: Add: "One query each for ownership, smart device use and feeder prices."
- No exclusions. AI search leans on press releases and report teasers because they rank well. Try: Add: "Exclude: vendor press releases and paywalled teasers."
- No shape or length. The AI explains each query in a paragraph, with bold labels. Try: Add: "Exactly 4 numbered lines, each under 20 words, plain text."
What a strong prompt includes
- Narrows the place and years
- Says what the deck needs
- Asks for an exclude line
- Asks for queries, not answers
- Sets the shape
