Catch a book club friend up without spoiling the ending
Practice: Setting limits and rules. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
Your friend Kenji fell behind on the book club novel and has only read through chapter 4. Get a catch-up text covering chapters 5-8 in at most 3 bullets, under 60 words, plain text, so he can join Thursday's discussion. Nothing from chapters 9-12 can appear, not even hints, and use the corrected character name from your notes.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Asking for a book summary. The AI summarizes everything in your notes, including the ending Kenji asked you not to spoil. Try: Say: "Only chapters 5-8. Nothing from 9-12."
- Hinting at what's next. The AI may add teasers like 'things get complicated' that give away the twist. Try: Add: "No hints about later chapters."
- Copying your typo. You wrote the wrong name in your notes before you fixed it. Try: Add: "The developer is Mr. Prall."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Cap each bullet: "each under 15 words."
- Not limiting bullets. The AI makes one bullet per chapter, or more. Try: Set a cap: "At most 3 bullets."
What a strong prompt includes
- Limits the chapters
- Rules out spoilers
- Limits the bullets
- Uses the right name
