Answer a customer's renewal price question with the math
Practice: Keeping the AI to your sources. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
A customer asked why her renewal quote went up. Reply under 90 words. The first sentence gives the new annual total, then show the math on its own line, explain the one reason for the change, and end by offering to lock the price with the deadline from your notes. No 'unfortunately', no 'market conditions'. Write a prompt that gets that reply.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 90 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part: "3 sentences of under 18 words, plus the math line."
- Using the wrong quote. The notes include the first draft's $10,200. The AI may use it. Try: Say it: "Sentence 1: your renewal is $9,000 for the year."
- No math, vague reason. The AI says "pricing was adjusted" instead of showing it's the 5 added seats. Try: Add: "Math on its own line: 25 x $30 x 12 = $9,000. Reason: 5 seats added in June."
- Stock lines, no deadline. AI blames "market conditions" and ends with "Let me know!" instead of the Dec 15 offer. Try: Add: "End with: renew by Dec 15 to keep $30/seat. No 'unfortunately' or 'market conditions'."
What a strong prompt includes
- Sets a word limit
- Leads with the total
- Shows the math
- Gives the real reason
- Ends with the deadline
