Explain a 1-4 grading scale to parents in plain words
Practice: Saying who it's for. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
Parents are confused by the new 1-4 report card scale. Explain it in exactly 4 numbered lines, one per score, each starting with the score and an equals sign ('1 =') and under 14 words, in plain everyday words. Make it clear which score is the goal. Avoid school jargon ('proficient', 'mastery', 'standards-based', 'benchmark'). Write a prompt that gets that.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Not setting the shape. The AI writes a long letter with a table and an FAQ. Try: Show it: "Exactly 4 numbered lines like: 1. 4 = goes beyond grade-level work."
- Leaving out the goal. The AI explains each score but doesn't say 3 is the target, so parents still see 3/4 as a C. Try: Add: "Say clearly that 3 is the goal. Don't compare to letter grades."
- Teacher jargon. AI explains scales with "proficient" and "mastery", the words that confused parents. Try: Ban them: "No proficient, mastery, standards-based or benchmark. Only the 4 lines. Plain text."
What a strong prompt includes
- Says who it's for
- Sets the number of lines
- Names the goal
- Bans jargon
- Asks for plain text
