About this exercise

You're preparing an intercompany netting settlement. Write a prompt for plain text with lines starting "Net A:", "Net B:", "Net C:", "Settlement:", "Unmatched:" and "Check:". When two entities record different amounts for the same balance, use the lower amount and show the difference on the Unmatched line, which is not settled. A positive net means the entity receives money. Show the math. Under 120 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Using the higher amount. The AI uses A's $20,000. Try: Say: "Use the lower of the two recorded amounts."
  • Settling the difference. The AI includes the $2,000 in the payments. Try: Add: "The unmatched difference is shown separately and not settled."
  • Stating a cause. The AI says A double-counted a charge. Try: Add: "Do not state a cause for the difference."
  • Missing the check. The AI skips proving the nets add to zero. Try: Add: "A Check line: nets sum to zero."
  • Markdown extras. The AI adds bold labels, headings and a closing note. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold. Output only the lines asked for."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each part short.

What a strong prompt includes
