Brief an assistant to fill a job application honestly

  • For Job seekers
  • You practice Keeping the AI to your sources
  • Time about 5 minutes

About this exercise

You want an AI assistant to fill an online job application from your resume. Write its brief: fill only what your resume supports (an in-progress certificate stays in progress), enter the phone as 10 digits with no spaces or dashes (the form rejects anything else), set how_did_you_hear to "Referral from Kim Tran", ask you about relocation and desired salary instead of guessing, and never submit. Output exactly 10 numbered plain-text lines under 120 words: one fill_field line per field it can fill, one ASK_HUMAN line covering both open questions, then DONE.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Not showing the log format. Left alone, the AI writes a friendly report with headings instead of a checkable action log. Try: Show it literally: "Format every line like 1. ACTION: tool(args), then ASK_HUMAN: and DONE: lines. Plain text."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs long, especially when it explains each step. Try: Cap each line instead: "each line under 20 words, no explanations."
  • Allowing stretched claims. To look stronger, the AI lists the certificate as earned. Try: Add: "Fill only what my resume supports. In-progress stays in progress."
  • Letting it guess. The AI picks a relocation answer and a market-rate salary for you. Try: Add: "Ask me about relocation and salary. Don't guess."
  • Leaving out what only you know. The AI can't know about your referral, and it treats submit as the last step. Try: Add: "how_did_you_hear: Referral from Kim Tran. Never submit."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Rules out made-up data
  • Keeps claims honest
  • Gives the phone format
  • Mentions the referral
  • Forbids submitting
