Build a 30-second career fair pitch in three lines

  • For College students
  • You practice Asking for a format you can use
  • Time about 5 minutes

About this exercise

You'll stop at the Bluewater Civil booth at tomorrow's career fair. Get a 30-second pitch as exactly 3 numbered lines, under 90 words, plain text: line 1 says your name, year and major; line 2 gives your strongest project with its corrected number; line 3 asks one specific question about their stormwater internship. Don't ask "are you hiring?".

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Getting a speech. The AI writes a long paragraph that takes a minute or more to say, which is how you'd ramble. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 3 numbered lines, each under 22 words."
  • Missing the corrected number. The AI may use 80 drains, the first figure in your notes. Try: Add: "Use 48 drains, the recounted number."
  • Ending with a weak ask. AI pitches end with 'Are you hiring?' or 'I'd love to learn more', which gives the recruiter nothing to answer. Try: Add: "Line 3: one specific question about the Stormwater Design internship. Don't ask if they're hiring."
  • Not saying what goes first. The AI may open with a hook instead of who you are, and recruiters need your year and major fast. Try: Add: "Line 1: name, year, major."
  • Forgetting where it's going. AI adds bold and headings that show up as stray symbols in a note card. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."

What a strong prompt includes
