About this exercise
You're revising a middle-grade novel and want to know which lines sound off for the character saying them. Get exactly 5 numbered lines, one per quoted line in order, each formatted "1. Fits" or "1. Off - reason", using only those two labels and each reason under 15 words, checked against your voice sheet. Under 80 words, plain text, no rewritten lines.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Asking if it 'sounds good'. The AI says the dialogue is lively and offers polish, without checking each voice. Try: Add: "Check each line against my voice sheet. Label it Fits or Off."
- No fixed labels. The AI writes 'mostly works' or 'could be tweaked', which doesn't tell you what to change. Try: Show it: "1. Fits" or "3. Off - Pruitt never uses slang."
- Getting rewrites. The AI rewrites the off lines for you, in its own voice, not yours. Try: Add: "No rewritten lines. I'll fix them."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Cap each reason: "each reason under 15 words."
- Forgetting where it's going. AI adds bold and headings that show up as stray symbols in your editor's notes. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."
