Label the problems in your dialogue scene, line by line

  • For College students
  • You practice Catching mistakes and made-up facts
  • Time about 5 minutes

About this exercise

Your workshop said the dialogue in your story feels stiff. Get exactly 4 numbered notes, each formatted "1. Line X: Label - reason", using exactly one of these labels: Info dump, Same voice, Unclear speaker. Each reason under 15 words, under 100 words in total, plain text, and no rewritten lines.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Getting general tips. Ask 'how can I improve' and the AI lists dialogue tips that don't point at your lines. Try: Ask for line-by-line notes: "Line X: Label - reason."
  • No fixed labels. Without labels, the AI's notes blur together and you can't see the pattern. Try: Add: "Use exactly one label: Info dump, Same voice or Unclear speaker."
  • Not giving the voices. The AI can't tell Mom sounds wrong unless it checks against your character notes. Try: Add: "Check each line against my character notes."
  • Getting rewrites. The AI rewrites the dialogue to show you, and the scene stops being yours. Try: Add: "No rewritten lines."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Cap each reason: "each reason under 15 words."
  • Forgetting where it's going. AI adds bold and headings that show up as stray symbols in your workshop notes. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."
