Check your sonnet's rhyme scheme without a rewrite
- For College students
- You practice Catching mistakes and made-up facts
- Time about 5 minutes
About this exercise
You wrote a Shakespearean sonnet for your poetry workshop and want to check the rhyme scheme before you submit it. Get exactly 14 numbered lines, one per line of your poem, each formatted "1. last word - A" with the letter that line should have in ABAB CDCD EFEF GG, then a last line starting "Breaks:" naming any line whose end word doesn't rhyme as it should. Plain text, and suggest no replacement words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Getting praise, not a check. Ask to 'check my sonnet' and the AI comments on imagery and theme and skips the rhyme scheme. Try: Ask for the check itself: "One line per poem line: last word - letter."
- No summary line. The AI lists the rhymes but leaves you to spot the break. Try: Add: "Last line: Breaks: the line numbers that don't rhyme as they should."
- Getting fixes you'd copy. The AI 'helps' by offering replacement words, which makes it its line, not yours. Try: Add: "Don't suggest replacement words. I'll fix it."
- Forgetting where it's going. AI adds bold and headings that show up as stray symbols in your workshop notes. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the rhyme scheme
- Asks for one line per line
- Asks for a breaks line
