Catch a chatbot's mistake on your invoice total

Practice: Catching mistakes and made-up facts. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

A chatbot drafted your invoice and got $925.75. Your contract says the 15% rush fee applies only to the rush edits line, and the stock photo is passed through at cost. Write exactly 3 numbered lines, one per line item, each with its math, then one unnumbered last line: Total: $X (chatbot's $925.75 was right or wrong). Plain text, under 60 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Not giving the contract rule. The AI accepts a rush fee on the whole invoice. Try: Add: "The 15% rush fee applies only to the rush edits line."
  • Not asking to see the work. If you just ask 'is this right?', the AI may agree with the chatbot. Try: Add a line to copy: "2. Rush edits: 3 x $80 = $240 + 15% = $276"
  • Marking up pass-through costs. The AI adds fees to the photo you bought at cost. Try: Add: "The stock photo is at cost, no fees."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each line: "each line under 12 words."
  • Forgetting where it goes. AI loves markdown tables and bold, which show up as clutter in an invoice tool. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, headings or tables."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Gives the rush rule
  • Keeps the photo at cost
  • Asks to show the math
  • Asks for a verdict
