Report clinic wait times without an outage day
Practice: Giving the right context. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
The patient experience committee's goal is an average wait under 20 minutes. Wednesday at North was the check-in system outage, so leave that day out. Write exactly 2 numbered lines, one per site, each as (days added) ÷ count = X min, then MET or MISSED. Then one unnumbered sentence naming the site that missed the goal. Plain text, under 70 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Not mentioning the outage. The table doesn't say what happened Wednesday, so the AI averages in 95 and North looks like 36 minutes. Try: Add: "Leave out North's Wednesday: system outage."
- Not giving the goal. The AI can't say MET or MISSED without the target. Try: Add: "The goal is under 20 minutes."
- Not asking to see the work. A committee will ask which days were counted. Try: Add a line to copy: "2. South: (15 + 17 + 16 + 19 + 18) ÷ 5 = 17 min, MET"
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each part: "each line under 16 words, the sentence under 12."
- Forgetting where it goes. AI loves markdown tables and bold, which show up as clutter in a committee email. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, headings or tables."
What a strong prompt includes
