Report patient portal sign-up rates by clinic site

Practice: Giving the right context. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

The clinic's goal is 50% of eligible patients active on the patient portal. Patients under 13 can't have their own account, so remove them from eligible. Write exactly 3 numbered lines, one per site, each as Site: active ÷ (patients − under 13) = X%, then MET or BELOW, then one unnumbered last line naming any site below goal. Plain text, under 70 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Not removing under-13 patients. The AI divides by all patients, so Northgate drops to 48% and looks below goal. Try: Add: "Eligible = patients minus under 13."
  • Not giving the goal. The AI can't mark MET or BELOW. Try: Add: "Goal: 50% of eligible."
  • Not asking to see the work. Bare rates hide the denominator. Try: Add a line to copy: "1. Northgate: 960 ÷ 1,600 = 60% MET"
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each line: "each line under 12 words."
  • Forgetting where it goes. AI loves markdown tables and bold, which show up as clutter in a quality meeting slide note. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, headings or tables."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Gives the goal
  • Asks to show the math
