Work out your weighted GPA with honors and AP bumps
Practice: Giving the right context. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
You want to check your semester GPA before a scholarship form. Your school adds 1 point for AP classes and 0.5 for Honors, and PE is pass/fail so it doesn't count. Write exactly 5 numbered lines, one per counted class, each showing letter = points + bump = total, then one unnumbered last line: GPA: sum ÷ 5 = X. Plain text, under 80 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Not giving your school's rules. The AI doesn't know your school's bumps or that PE is pass/fail, so it gives an unweighted 3.33. Try: Add: "AP adds 1, Honors adds 0.5, PE doesn't count."
- Not asking to see the work. A bare GPA is hard to check before it goes on a form. Try: Add a line to copy: "1. AP Biology: B = 3 + 1 = 4"
- Getting advice instead of a number. The AI adds tips about Spanish makeup quizzes. Try: Add: "End with GPA: sum ÷ 5 = X. Nothing else."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each line: "each line under 12 words."
- Forgetting where it goes. AI loves markdown tables and bold, which show up as clutter in a scholarship form. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, headings or tables."
What a strong prompt includes
- Gives the bump rules
- Leaves out PE
- Asks to show the math
- Sets a word limit
- Asks for plain text
