Project renewal revenue with a price uplift and a locked contract

Practice: Giving the right context. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

Your Q1 renewals get a 7% price uplift, except accounts with a multi-year price lock. Write exactly 3 numbered lines, one per account, each showing current ARR and the renewal math, then one unnumbered last line: Total renewal ARR: $X. Plain text, under 60 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Not giving the uplift. The AI uses last year's 5% or no uplift. Try: Add: "Apply a 7% uplift."
  • Ignoring the lock. The AI raises every account, including the locked one. Try: Add: "Accounts with a price lock stay flat."
  • Not asking to see the work. Finance needs to trace each number. Try: Add a line to copy: "1. Ashford: $20,000 x 1.07 = $21,400"
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each line: "each line under 12 words."
  • Forgetting where it goes. AI loves markdown tables and bold, which show up as clutter in a finance request. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, headings or tables."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Gives the uplift
  • Handles the lock
  • Asks to show the math
  • Sets a word limit
  • Asks for plain text
