Flag chronic absence using your district's rule

Practice: Giving the right context. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

Your district flags chronic absence at 10% or more of school days missed, and school-sponsored trips don't count as absences. There have been 50 school days. Write exactly 6 numbered lines, one per student, each as Name: absences ÷ 50 = X%, then FLAG or OK. Plain text, under 90 words, nothing else.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Not giving the district rule. The AI guesses a cutoff, or uses 'over 10%' and misses Cole. Try: Add: "Flag at 10% or more of 50 days."
  • Counting the band trip. The AI doesn't know school trips aren't absences, so Dina gets flagged. Try: Add: "School-sponsored trips don't count. Dina has 4 absences."
  • Not showing the division. Bare labels are hard to defend to a parent or counselor. Try: Add a line to copy: "1. Ava Brooks: 3 ÷ 50 = 6% OK"
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each line: "each line under 12 words."
  • Forgetting where it goes. AI loves markdown tables and bold, which show up as clutter in a counselor referral form. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, headings or tables."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Handles the trip
  • Asks to show the math
  • Sets a word limit
