Find quiz questions to reteach after removing absent zeros

Practice: Giving the right context. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

You want to know which quiz questions to reteach (under 50% correct). Five of your 25 students were absent, and the export scored them 0 on every question, so divide by 20, not 25. Write exactly 5 numbered lines, one per question, each as Q#: correct ÷ 20 = X%, then RETEACH or OK. Plain text, under 70 words, nothing else.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Not mentioning the absent students. The export can't tell absent from wrong, so the AI divides by 25 and flags Q4. Try: Add: "5 students were absent. Divide by 20."
  • Not giving the cutoff. The AI makes up its own idea of 'low.' Try: Add: "RETEACH if under 50%, otherwise OK."
  • Not asking to see the work. Bare labels hide the denominator. Try: Add a line to copy: "1. Q1: 18 ÷ 20 = 90% OK"
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each line: "each line under 10 words."
  • Forgetting where it goes. AI loves markdown tables and bold, which show up as clutter in your planning notes. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, headings or tables."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Mentions absent students
  • Gives the cutoff
  • Asks to show the math
  • Sets a word limit
  • Asks for plain text
