Rewrite a hyped investor update paragraph in a plain voice
- For Executives
- You practice Getting the tone right
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Intermediate
About this exercise
Your board chair says the founder's investor updates sound like ads. Rewrite this paragraph in a plain, factual voice. The first sentence states that Q3 revenue missed plan and shows the gap as math. Keep every number exactly, remove the hype, add no other claims, and end with exactly "Next update: January 15." One paragraph, no bullets, under 65 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Softening instead of rewriting. The AI tones it down a little but keeps the upbeat opener and hides the miss. Try: Say: "Sentence 1 states that revenue missed plan, with the gap as math."
- Keeping some hype or excuses. Phrases like "strong momentum" or "just timing" survive the rewrite. Try: Add: "No hype words, excuses or predictions. Only what happened."
- No fixed ending. The AI ends with thanks to the team or a forward-looking line. Try: Add: "End with exactly: Next update: January 15."
- Trusting the AI to count words. Rewrites land near the original length. Try: Say: "One paragraph, 5 short sentences, under 50 words, no bullets."
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the voice
- Leads with the miss and its math
- Keeps the numbers
- Gives the exact ending
- Sets length and shape
