About this exercise
You're reconciling headcount for the CFO. Write a prompt for a markdown table with columns Step, Count and Math, covering opening, hires, terminations, computed ending and reported ending, followed by one "Gap:" line. Transfers between departments net to zero company-wide, so leave them out. If the computed ending does not match the reported ending, the Gap line states the difference and says what to confirm with HR. Do not guess the cause as fact. Under 110 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Counting the transfers. The AI adds 3 in and subtracts 3 out, which clutters the bridge. Try: Say: "Leave transfers out; they net to zero."
- Forcing the totals to tie. The AI changes a number or ignores the 126. Try: Add: "Show computed ending and reported ending separately."
- Stating the cause as fact. The AI says the intern conversion is the answer. Try: Add: "Do not state a cause as fact; say what to confirm with HR."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each part short.
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the columns
- Excludes transfers
- Asks for the Gap line
- Says to confirm, not conclude
- Caps length
