- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Beginner
About this exercise
You're pricing a software renewal for the office manager. Write a prompt for plain text with lines starting "Monthly list:", "Annual list:", "Volume discount:", "Net annual:" and "Per seat per month:". Use the current price per seat. Show the math. Under 80 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Using the old price. The AI uses $20 from the forwarded email. Try: Say: "Use the current price of $15."
- Discounting the monthly price. The AI discounts but forgets annual totals. Try: Add: "Discount applies to the annual list total."
- Wrong per-seat math. The AI divides by 12 only. Try: Add: "Per seat per month = net annual / (seats x 12)."
- Markdown extras. The AI adds bold labels, headings and a closing note. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold. Output only the lines asked for."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each part short.
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the five lines
- Uses the current price
- Applies the discount to the annual total
- Asks for the math
- Caps length
