Boil a dress code down to two clear lines

Practice: Asking for a format you can use. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

New hires keep asking what to wear. Write exactly 2 lines, labeled Warehouse: and Office:, each under 30 words, plain text, using the current rules. The Warehouse line must lead with the required safety items, and leave out the history of the policy and anything still under review.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Asking to 'explain the dress code'. The AI writes sections with bold headings, bullets and background. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 2 lines labeled Warehouse: and Office:. Plain text."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each line instead: "each line under 25 words."
  • Using the old rules. The original shorts and jeans rules are listed first, with updates below. Try: Add: "Use the Mar 1 updates: no shorts ever; jeans any day."
  • Including history and maybes. The AI adds background and mentions the hoodie idea to be thorough. Try: Add: "No history, nothing under review."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Leads with safety
  • Uses the updates
  • Leaves out history
  • Sets a word limit
