Explain overtime rules to new supervisors in three lines
Practice: Asking for a format you can use. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
New shift supervisors need the overtime rules on one card. Write exactly 3 lines labeled Who:, Rate:, and Approval:, each one plain sentence, plain text, under 75 words, using the policy as updated. For situations the policy doesn't cover, point to HR instead of explaining.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Asking to 'explain overtime'. The AI writes a long explainer with headings and examples. Try: Show the shape: "3 lines labeled Who:, Rate:, Approval:."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each line instead: "each line under 18 words."
- Missing the updates. The Jan 1 changes sit under each rule, and the AI may skip them. Try: Add: "Include the Jan 1 updates: 2x peak Sundays; supervisors approve up to 5 hours."
- Explaining state rules. The AI tries to cover daily overtime and gets it wrong for some states. Try: Add: "No state rules; point to HR."
What a strong prompt includes

- Uses the updates
