Prep a STAR interview answer with the real result
Practice: Asking for a format you can use. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
You're prepping for the interview question "Tell me about a time you handled a conflict." Write exactly 4 lines labeled "Situation:", "Task:", "Action:" and "Result:", in first person, under 90 words, plain text, no bullets. Put most of the words in Action, use the corrected result number, and add no details that aren't in your notes. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- No fixed shape. The AI writes a paragraph or adds a 'Why this works' section. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 4 lines: Situation:, Task:, Action:, Result:. No bullets."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 90 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "Situation and Task under 15 words each, Action under 35."
- Rushing the action. The AI spends most words on the setup, but interviewers care what you did. Try: Add: "Make Action the longest line: separate talks, rotation chart, IT fix."
- Using the first number. 18% appears first in the notes; 11% is the corrected figure. Try: Add: "Result: picks up 11%, both stayed. Add nothing."
What a strong prompt includes
- Uses STAR labels
- Weights the action
- Uses the corrected number
- Rules out invention
- Sets a word limit
