Send a late rent reminder with the fee math shown

Practice: Catching mistakes and made-up facts. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

You manage a rental, and a tenant's November rent is late. Write a reminder under 70 words, plain text: the total now due and the date it was due in the first sentence, the math on one line (rent + late fee = total), and how to pay. Apply the lease's late-fee rule as written for today's date, and don't mention eviction or legal steps. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 70 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "4 sentences, each under 16 words."
  • Burying the amount. The AI opens with "Just a friendly reminder..." and the number shows up later. Try: Add: "First sentence: $1,725 is now due; November rent was due Nov 1."
  • Misreading the fee rule. The AI adds daily fees that haven't started yet, or skips the late fee. Try: Add: "Today is Nov 7: only the $75 fee applies. Show $1,650 + $75 = $1,725."
  • Threatening too soon. AI reminders often warn about "further action". Try: Add: "No eviction or legal language."
  • Ignoring where it will be pasted. AI loves bold and headings, which show up as stray ** and # symbols in the email. Try: Name the place and the format: "For the email. Plain text, no bold or headings."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Puts the total first
  • Shows the math
  • Applies the date
  • Rules out legal threats
  • Sets a word limit
