Write a weekly class update families can read in 20 seconds
Practice: Asking for a format you can use. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
You send a weekly update to families. Write exactly 3 lines starting with "This week:", "Ask your child:" and "Coming up:", in that order, under 60 words, plain text, no bullets. "Ask your child" must be one question a parent could ask at dinner, and "Coming up" must use the rescheduled test date. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- No fixed shape. The AI writes a cheerful newsletter with headings and bullet lists. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 3 lines: This week:, Ask your child:, Coming up:. No bullets."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 60 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "each line under 20 words."
- No conversation starter. The AI lists topics, so parents don't know what to ask. Try: Add: "Ask your child: one question a parent could ask at dinner."
- Using the old test date. Nov 13 appears first; the update moves it. Try: Add: "The math test is Monday Nov 17."
What a strong prompt includes
- Shows the 3 labels
- Asks for a dinner question
- Uses the new test date
- Rules out bullets
- Sets a word limit
