Write peer observation feedback with time-stamped moments

Practice: Asking for a format you can use. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

You observed a colleague's class and owe her a short feedback note. Write exactly 3 lines labeled "Glow:", "Glow:" and "Grow:", each pointing to a specific time-stamped moment from your notes (like "at 10:14"), under 80 words, plain text, no bullets. Write as one colleague to another, with no evaluation words (effective, ineffective, needs improvement, rating). Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • No fixed shape. The AI writes a formal observation report with sections and ratings. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 3 lines: Glow:, Glow:, Grow:. No bullets."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 80 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "each line under 25 words."
  • Vague praise. "Great engagement!" doesn't tell her what to keep doing. Try: Add: "Each line names a time-stamped moment, like 'at 10:14'."
  • Sounding like an evaluator. The AI uses words like "effective" and "needs improvement", which this program avoids. Try: Add: "Colleague to colleague. Grow: the back corner she asked about. No evaluation words."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Shows the labels
  • Asks for time stamps
  • Targets her question
  • Bans evaluation words
  • Sets a word limit
