Make a buddy checklist for a new hire's first week
- For Managers and team leads
- You practice Asking for a format you can use
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Beginner
About this exercise
Make a first-week checklist for the buddy of Omar, who starts Monday Jun 9. Write exactly 6 lines in plain text, each starting with [ ] then the day name, a colon and one action under 12 words. Use the final facts only, with at least one line each for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Do not include anything about pay or benefits.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Using the old badge day. The AI puts the badge on Monday. Try: Say: "Use the final facts; the badge is Tuesday."
- Wrong line format. The AI uses a markdown checklist or numbered steps. Try: Say: "Each line starts with [ ] then the day name and a colon."
- Including HR topics. The AI adds benefits. Try: Say: "Leave out pay and benefits."
- Wrong count. The AI writes eight lines. Try: Say: "Exactly 6 lines."
- Markdown. The AI bolds days and adds headings. Try: Say: "Plain text."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each part instead, for example: "each line under 15 words."
What a strong prompt includes
- Fixes the line start
- Says exactly 6 lines
- Uses the final facts
- Caps action length
- Excludes pay
