About this exercise

Draft one behavioral question for each of the four competencies in a table with the header Competency | Question | Strong answer includes. Every question starts "Tell me about a time" and is under 20 words. The last column is one short phrase (under 10 words) that describes a strong answer, based on the role notes. Do not ask about age, family, health or origin. The same questions are used for every candidate. Plain text. HR reviews before use.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Asking about personal situations. The AI adds a stamina or family question. Try: Say: "Do not ask about age, family, health, origin or stamina."
  • Not behavioral. The AI asks hypotheticals like "What would you do". Try: Say: "Every question starts Tell me about a time."
  • Wrong last column. The AI writes a paragraph. Try: Say: "A short phrase under 10 words based on the role notes."
  • Wrong table. The AI adds a rating column. Try: Say: "Exactly this header and four rows."
  • Markdown. The AI bolds competencies. Try: Say: "Plain text."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each part instead, for example: "each line under 15 words."

What a strong prompt includes
