Turn a headache log into a timeline for your doctor

  • For Nurses and healthcare workers
  • You practice Keeping the AI to your sources
  • Time about 5 minutes

About this exercise

Your doctor's visit is short, so you want a clean timeline of your headaches from your messy notes. Get exactly 5 numbered dated lines, oldest first, like "1. Oct 14: headache after work, about 4 hours", using your corrected date for the first one. Then one line starting "Questions to ask:" with 3 questions, one of them about how often you take ibuprofen. Don't guess a cause. Under 130 words, plain text. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Missing the correction. The AI copies the first date it sees, Oct 9, and skips your correction at the bottom. Try: Add: "Use my Nov 5 correction: the first headache was Oct 6."
  • Letting the AI guess the cause. The AI suggests migraines, eyestrain or caffeine, which is your doctor's call, not a chatbot's. Try: Add: "Don't guess causes or name any condition. Use only my notes."
  • Not asking for questions. The AI stops at the timeline, so you walk in without the questions you meant to ask. Try: Add: "Last line: Questions to ask: 3 questions, one about how often I take ibuprofen."
  • Getting a long write-up. The AI writes paragraphs with headings like History and Lifestyle that won't fit a 15-minute visit. Try: Say: "Exactly 5 numbered dated lines, oldest first, then the questions line. Plain text."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 130 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part: "each dated line under 14 words."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Uses the correction
  • Rules out guessing a cause
  • Asks for questions
  • Sets the shape of the timeline
  • Sets a word limit
