About this exercise
A customer, Jonah, wrote a happy email and you'd like to use one sentence in a case study. Write a prompt for a permission-request email: subject on a line starting "Subject:", the exact sentence about the Monday planning meeting copied word for word inside quotation marks, where it would appear (the case study page and one LinkedIn post), and a clear line saying he can edit it or say no. End the body with the exact line "Reply YES to approve, or send me edits." before the signature "Priya". Under 110 words, no gifts or discounts, plain text.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Paraphrasing his sentence. The AI polishes the quote, which is no longer what he wrote. Try: Add: "Copy the sentence word for word inside quotation marks."
- Offering a thank-you gift. The notes mention a gift card and the AI offers it. Try: Say: "No gifts or discounts."
- Assuming consent. The AI writes as if it's agreed. Try: Say: "Ask first; he can edit or say no; nothing runs before he agrees."
- Letting markdown through. AI adds bold text and headings by default. Try: Add: "Plain text only, no bold, no headings."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and often runs past a word limit. Try: Cap each part (for example "each line under 15 words") so the total lands well under the limit.
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the uses
- Requires the exact quote
- Offers edit or decline
- Bans gifts
- Caps length
