Plan the night before and morning of a moved-up interview

Practice: Giving the right context. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

Your in-person interview just moved an hour earlier, and you want a plan for the night before and the morning of. You want exactly 6 numbered lines in time order, each starting with a time, under 80 words, plain text. Work the morning times back from the new interview time using your commute and arrive-early notes, and include only tasks from your notes, no generic interview tips. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Using the old time. The 10:00 time is at the top of your notes, so the AI plans around it. Try: Add: "The interview is now 9:00. Work the morning back from 9:00."
  • Not doing the time math. The AI guesses a wake-up time instead of counting back from the commute. Try: Add: "Arrive 15 min early, 40 min bus, 45 min to get ready."
  • Letting the AI add tips. The AI loves generic advice like power poses and mock answers. Try: Add: "Only tasks from my notes. No general interview tips."
  • Letting the AI pick the layout. The AI writes a long checklist with bold sections. Try: Be exact: "Exactly 6 numbered lines, each starting with a time. Plain text."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 80 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "each line under 9 words."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Says how many lines
  • Uses the new time
  • Works back the times
  • Bans generic tips
  • Sets a word limit
