Make a Thanksgiving prep countdown around a changed dinner time

Practice: Giving the right context. About 5 minutes.

About this exercise

You're hosting Thanksgiving and want a prep countdown to text your teenage kids, who are helping. You want exactly 6 numbered lines from Tuesday to Thursday, each starting with day and time and naming who does it, under 90 words, plain text. Dinner moved to 2pm, so time Thursday's tasks back from the new time using the cook times in your notes. Write a prompt that gets you exactly that.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Missing the time change. The 4pm dinner is in the heading, so the AI times everything from it. Try: Add: "Dinner is now 2pm. Time Thursday's tasks back from 2pm."
  • Not doing the cook-time math. The AI guesses times instead of counting back from the cook and rest times. Try: Add: "Turkey needs 4 hours plus 30 min rest, mac and cheese 45 min, rolls 15 min."
  • Leaving out who does it. The AI writes tasks but drops the names, so the kids don't know which are theirs. Try: Add: "Start each line with day and time, and name who does it."
  • Letting the AI add extras. The AI adds shopping reminders and cooking tips. Try: Add: "Only the prep jobs in my notes. Plain text, 6 numbered lines."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 90 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part instead: "each line under 10 words."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Says how many lines
  • Uses the new dinner time
  • Works back from cook times
  • Names who does each job
  • Shows the line shape
