Email a parent after a conference using the right details
- For Teachers
- You practice Keeping the AI to your sources
- Time about 5 minutes
About this exercise
Write a follow-up email to Mr. Haddad after his son's parent-teacher conference, using the AI notetaker summary and your own correction note. Start with 'Subject:', thank him in one sentence, list exactly 2 numbered agreed steps with who and when, and sign off as Ms. Lindqvist. Leave out grades and percentages. Plain text, under 110 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Trusting the wrong day. The notetaker says Tuesday, and the AI copies it. Try: Add: "Math help is Thursdays 3:15-4:00, per my note."
- Adding a promise. The AI includes the 3-week update as a commitment you never made. Try: Add: "Only the 2 agreed steps. No progress-update promise, no chess club."
- Sharing numbers. The AI repeats the 74% and the missing homework count. Try: Add: "No grades, percentages or counts."
- No subject or sign-off. The AI starts with 'Dear Mr. Haddad' and adds a placeholder signature. Try: Add: "Start with 'Subject:' and sign off as Ms. Lindqvist."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting words, so a total word cap usually lands over. Try: Cap the parts: "thanks under 20 words, each step under 15 words."
What a strong prompt includes
- Uses the correction
- Limits to agreed steps
- Leaves out grades
