Outline parent-night slides without teacher jargon

  • For Teachers
  • You practice Saying who it's for
  • Time about 5 minutes

About this exercise

You're presenting your 7th-grade science plan at parent night. Write a 5-slide outline: exactly 5 numbered slide titles in this order: Welcome, What we'll learn, How grading works, Field trip, How to reach me, each followed by exactly 2 bullets starting with "- ". Parents aren't teachers, so don't use the words formative, summative, scaffold, rubric or standards. Plain text, under 130 words. Use the field trip date that's current now.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Teacher talk. The AI copies 'formative' and 'summative' straight from your notes. Try: Add: "Parents aren't teachers. Don't use formative, summative, scaffold, rubric or standards."
  • Old trip date. The notes say April 18 first, and the AI uses it. Try: Add: "The trip moved to May 9."
  • Letting the AI pick slides. The AI adds slides like 'Classroom rules' and 'Supply list' and skips yours. Try: List them: "5 slides in this order: Welcome, What we'll learn, ..."
  • Markdown slides. The AI uses bold titles and headings that don't paste into slides. Try: Add: "Plain text, 2 bullets per slide starting with '- '."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting words, so a total word cap usually lands over. Try: Cap each part: "each bullet under 10 words."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Says who the audience is
  • Bans the jargon
  • Uses the moved date
  • Names the slides
  • Caps the length
