About this exercise

Draft a follow-up email template for job fair contacts in plain text, under 110 words. Use these merge fields exactly as written: {first_name}, {role_discussed}, {event_name}, {next_step}. First line exactly: Subject: Great to meet you at {event_name}. Include the application deadline and the link from the notes, and one sentence saying that applying does not guarantee an interview. Last line exactly: Best, Campus Recruiting Team. Do not mention any individual's personal details.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Filling in names. The AI replaces merge fields with real names. Try: Say: "Use the merge fields exactly as written."
  • Using sign-up comments. The AI mentions veterans or language. Try: Say: "Do not mention any individual's personal details."
  • Missing the disclaimer. The AI implies an interview. Try: Say: "One sentence that applying does not guarantee an interview."
  • Exact lines. The AI writes its own subject. Try: Say: "First and last lines exactly as given."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total word limit and it often lands over it. Try: Cap each part instead, for example: "each line under 15 words."
  • Markdown. The AI bolds words or adds headings. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."

What a strong prompt includes
