About this exercise

Nadia Osei asked for 20% off if she signs this week. Write a plain-text reply from Ben under 90 words. Do not promise or hint at the discount, and don't accept the this-week deadline. Say you will take the request to the deal desk and reply by Tue Nov 10. Mention that the current quote stays valid through Nov 30. Ask her one question about a trade, such as a longer term or annual prepay.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Hinting at a yes. The AI writes 'I'm optimistic we can make this work'. Try: Add: "Do not promise or hint at the discount."
  • Accepting the deadline. The AI says 'let's get it signed this week'. Try: Add: "Do not accept the this-week deadline; the quote is valid through Nov 30."
  • No clear next step. The AI says 'I'll get back to you soon'. Try: Add: "Say you'll take it to the deal desk and reply by Tue Nov 10."
  • Several questions. The AI asks four questions about their needs. Try: Add: "Ask exactly one question about a trade like a longer term or annual prepay."
  • Long, formatted reply. The AI writes several paragraphs with bold text. Try: Add: "Plain text, under 90 words."

What a strong prompt includes

  • Bans promises
  • Gives the reply date
  • Uses the real date only
