About this exercise
Draft a renewal email to Tom at Kestrel Print. Our 6% price increase starts for renewals on Jan 1 2027, but Tom's renewal is earlier, so his price does not change. State his unchanged renewal amount, say plainly that the increase will apply to his next renewal, and ask him to return the signed order form by Dec 10. No urgency tricks, no "lock in now" language. Under 120 words, plain text, subject line first.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Applying the increase now. The AI mixes up the dates and raises this renewal by 6%. Try: Add: "His price does not change; the increase applies to his next renewal."
- Fake urgency. The AI says "renew early to lock in today's price." Try: Add: "No urgency language such as lock in or act now."
- Vague call to action. The AI says "let me know" with no date. Try: Add: "Ask for the signed order form by Dec 10."
- Long markdown email. The AI writes a long formatted email. Try: Add: "Plain text, subject line first, under 120 words."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs long when you only give a total. Try: Cap each part, like "each line under 15 words," so the total lands well under the limit.
What a strong prompt includes
- States the amount unchanged
- Clarifies which renewal
- Bans urgency
- Names the deadline
- Sets the length and form
