Explain who to page for what to a new unit clerk
Practice: Asking for a format you can use. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
A new unit clerk starts tonight and needs to know who to page. Write exactly 3 numbered lines, each shaped 'If [situation], page [role] at [number]', using the current pager numbers. Plain text, nothing before or after the lines. Write a prompt that gets that guide.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Not setting the count. The AI copies the whole contact sheet, including closet codes and fax tips. Try: Set it: "Exactly 3 numbered lines."
- Not giving the line shape. The AI writes paragraphs, so a new clerk can't scan for the right number. Try: Show it: "Each line: If [situation], page [role] at [number]."
- Using day or old numbers. The sheet lists day pagers and a retired night pager. The AI may pick the wrong one. Try: Say it: "Night shift: charge nurse 4417, hospitalist 4430."
- Paging for the wrong things. The AI may tell the clerk to page for broken equipment, which biomed won't answer. Try: Add: "Equipment is a phone call, not a page. Nothing else. Plain text."
What a strong prompt includes

- Shows the line shape
- Uses night numbers
