Ask your counselor for a schedule change before the deadline
Practice: Giving the right context. About 5 minutes.
About this exercise
You want to switch from AP Chemistry to Honors Physics. Email your counselor under 90 words. The first line is 'Subject: Schedule change request - [your name], Grade 11', then say exactly which class you're dropping and adding with the period, give one honest reason, and confirm your parent approved. Use the real add/drop deadline. Write a prompt that gets that email.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for "under 90 words" and it often lands well over. Try: Cap each part: "Subject line, then 4 sentences under 18 words."
- Skipping the subject format. The AI writes a vague subject like "Question" or none at all. Try: Give it: "First line: Subject: Schedule change request - Daniel Kim, Grade 11."
- Leaving out what the office needs. The AI forgets the periods or uses last year's Jan 23 date. Try: Add: "Drop AP Chemistry P3, add Honors Physics P3. Deadline Jan 16."
- Missing the parent approval. The handbook requires it. Without it, the request stalls. Try: Add: "Say my mom approved and will reply. Don't mention Jake."
What a strong prompt includes
- Sets a word limit
- Gives the subject line
- Names both classes and period
- Uses the right deadline
- Confirms parent approval
