About this exercise

You're calculating a commission clawback for payroll. Write a prompt for plain text with lines starting "Days since payment:", "Within 90 days:", "Clawback base:", "Clawback:" and "Commission kept:". The plan claws back the commission rate on refunded dollars when the refund happens within 90 days of the customer's payment. Show the math. Do not use the rep's view of what should happen. Under 80 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Clawing back the whole commission. The AI takes back $1,000 because the invoice was partly refunded. Try: Say: "Claw back the rate on refunded dollars only."
  • Miscounting days. The AI mis-adds across months. Try: Add: "Show days from Aug 15 to Nov 3."
  • Following the rep. The AI keeps the full commission. Try: Add: "Apply the plan; ignore the rep's view."
  • Markdown extras. The AI adds bold labels, headings and a closing note. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold. Output only the lines asked for."
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each part short.

What a strong prompt includes

  • Names the five lines
  • States the plan rule
  • Asks for the math
  • Ignores the rep's view
  • Caps length
