About this exercise
You're paying two invoices on Terms 2/10, net 30 (2% off if paid within 10 days of the invoice date; day 10 still counts). Write a prompt for plain text with lines starting "Invoice A:", "Invoice B:", "Entry A:" and "Check:". For each invoice say whether it qualifies and the amount to pay, with the math. Entry A gives the lines for the discounted payment. Check says debits equal credits. Under 90 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Giving B the discount. The AI applies 2% to both. Try: Say: "Count days from the invoice date; day 10 counts, day 12 does not."
- Wrong entry sides. The AI debits cash or books the discount as expense. Try: Add: "Debit AP at full amount; credit Cash and Purchase Discounts."
- Missing labels. The AI writes a table. Try: Add: "Four lines with these exact labels."
- Markdown extras. The AI adds bold labels, headings and a closing note. Try: Say: "Plain text, no bold. Output only the lines asked for."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and runs past word limits. Try: Ask for fewer words than the real cap and keep each part short.
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the four lines
- Counts days from invoice date
- Applies 2% correctly
- Names the accounts
- Caps length
