Turn a real work mistake into an honest STAR answer
- For Job seekers
- You practice Asking for a format you can use
- Time about 5 minutes
About this exercise
Interviewers often ask, "Tell me about a mistake you made." Turn your scheduling mistake into exactly 4 numbered lines labeled Situation, Task, Action and Result, under 140 words, plain text. Own the mistake yourself without blaming your coworker, and end the Result with the change you made that's still in place.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Getting paragraphs, not lines. The AI writes STAR as long bold-labeled paragraphs that are hard to say out loud. Try: Show it: "1. Situation: ... 2. Task: ... 3. Action: ... 4. Result: ..."
- Spreading the blame. The AI may mention that a coworker told you late, which sounds like blaming him. Try: Add: "Own the mistake. Don't mention Jordan."
- Missing the corrected number. The AI may grab 32 people, the first number in your notes. Try: Add: "I booked 30 people, not 32."
- Ending on the fix, not the change. The AI ends with the free passes, so the lasting lesson gets lost. Try: Add: "End the Result with the Monday bike-count check I still do."
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting. Ask for a total and it often lands 20% over. Try: Cap each line: "each line under 25 words."
- Forgetting where it's going. AI adds bold and headings that show up as stray symbols in your interview notes. Try: Add: "Plain text, no bold, no headings."
