Turn three customer comments into need statements

  • For Product managers
  • You practice Showing an example of what you want

About this exercise

Rewrite the three comments as exactly 3 numbered need statements in the form "As a [role], I need [what] so I can [why]." Use the role and words from the comment. If the comment gives no reason, write "so I can (reason not given)" instead of inventing one. Each statement is 25 words or fewer. Plain text, nothing else.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Inventing the reason. The AI writes "so I can save time" for Marcus. Try: Say: "If the comment gives no reason, write so I can (reason not given)."
  • Dropping the role. The AI writes "As a user". Try: Say: "Use the role from the comment."
  • Adding plan or promise. The AI mentions the Enterprise plan or says it will be built. Try: Say: "Neutral; no plans, no promises."
  • Getting markdown back. AI adds bold and headings by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
  • Leaving the item count open. The AI adds or drops items to feel complete. Try: Say "exactly N numbered lines, nothing else".
  • Trusting the AI to count words. The AI runs long and cannot count its own words. Try: Cap each part ("each line under 12 words") and add "under N words in total".
  • Leaving a requirement unstated. The AI follows its own defaults unless the prompt spells this out. Try: State it plainly in your prompt: the output has exactly 3 numbered lines, each in the form 'As a [role], I need [what] so I can [why].'.

What a strong prompt includes

  • Shows the template
  • Reason fallback
  • Uses the comment's role
  • Word cap
  • Asks for plain text
  • Sets the exact item count
  • Sets a word cap
