Write a banner for an outdated help article
- For Customer support teams
- You practice Asking for a format you can use
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Beginner
About this exercise
Write the banner text for the top of an old help article. Start with the words "Heads up:", say which version it covers, name the replacement article, and give the date the old article will be removed. Plain text, two sentences at most, under 45 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Using the shutdown date. The AI says the article disappears Dec 31. Try: Say: "The article is removed Jan 15, 2027."
- Mentioning pricing. The AI speculates about a free move. Try: Say: "Don't mention pricing."
- No exact opener. The AI starts with 'Note:' or 'Important'. Try: Say: "Start with the words Heads up:"
- Getting markdown back. AI adds bold and headings by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and usually runs long, so a vague "keep it short" lands well over the limit. Try: Cap each part instead of the total, for example "each line under 15 words".
What a strong prompt includes
- Gives the opening words
- Gives the removal date
- Rules out pricing
- Asks for plain text
- Sets a length limit
