Decide four returned items under different policies
- For Customer support teams
- You practice Setting limits and rules
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Advanced
About this exercise
Output a table with the header "Item | Decision | Refund" and four rows I1 to I4, Decision being Yes or No, then a last line "Total refund: $N". Apply each item's own window; today is Nov 6. Plain text, under 70 words.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Ignoring the clothing window. The AI refunds the 70-day jacket. Try: Say: "Clothing is 60 days."
- Missing the shipping refund. The AI refunds only $15 for I4. Try: Say: "Wrong item: refund the shipping too."
- Refunding the final sale. The AI is generous with I3. Try: Say: "Final sale is never returnable."
- Getting markdown back. AI adds bold and headings by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and usually runs long, so a vague "keep it short" lands well over the limit. Try: Cap each part instead of the total, for example "each line under 15 words".
What a strong prompt includes
- Gives the header
- States each window
- Asks for the total
- Asks for plain text
- Sets a length limit
