Decide a gift return without a receipt and value the credit
- For Small business owners
- You practice Keeping the AI to your sources
- Time about 5 minutes
- Level Intermediate
About this exercise
Start with the line "RETURN CHECK: Tolly toaster" on its own. Fill three lines starting "Eligible:", "Credit:" and "Requirement:". Today is Nov 6. Use the price history only inside the policy's window. Plain text, under 70 words, and show the dates behind the credit value.
Common mistakes when you ask AI for this
- Using the lowest ever price. The AI picks $39 even though it is older than 90 days. Try: Say: "Only prices since Aug 8 (90 days before Nov 6)."
- Offering cash or full price. The AI gives $60 or a refund to her card. Try: Say: "Store credit only, at the lowest price in the window."
- Skipping the ID rule. The AI leaves out the requirement. Try: Say: "The Requirement line covers name and photo ID."
- Getting markdown back. AI adds bold and headings by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
- Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and usually runs long, so a vague "keep it short" lands well over the limit. Try: Cap each part instead of the total, for example "each line under 15 words".
What a strong prompt includes
- Names the three lines
- Works out the window
- Says store credit only
- Asks for plain text
- Sets a length limit
