Check four competitor offers against a price-match policy

About this exercise

Decide each offer against the policy, applying the rules in the order listed. Output a table with the header "Offer | Match? | Rule" and four rows. Match? is Yes or No, and Rule is the number of the first rule that decides it (for a Yes, write "All pass"). Then add a last line "Total refund: $X" for the price differences you would honor. Plain text, under 100 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Matching the lowest price. The AI picks the cheapest offer, the marketplace seller. Try: Say: "Apply the rules in order; the first failing rule decides."
  • Wrong total. The AI adds up all differences or uses the wrong price. Try: Say: "Total only the offers that match; refund is $120 minus the offer."
  • Missing the table format. The AI writes prose about each offer. Try: Give the header and the Yes/No plus rule number.
  • Getting markdown back. AI adds bold and headings by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and usually runs long, so a vague "keep it short" lands well over the limit. Try: Cap each part instead of the total, for example "each line under 15 words".

What a strong prompt includes

  • Gives the table header
  • Says to apply rules in order
  • Defines the total
  • Asks for plain text
  • Sets a length limit
