About this exercise

Start with the line "RENEWAL CHECK - Quill Dental". Then write four lines starting "Clause:", "Notice deadline:", "Status:" and "Next:". Quote the clause words in quotation marks, calculate the date from the clause, and refer any request to waive or change it to the contracts team without promising an outcome. Do not say what the contract legally means. Plain text, under 90 words.

Common mistakes when you ask AI for this

  • Promising a waiver. The AI says we'll probably let them cancel. Try: Say: "Refer waivers to the contracts team; promise nothing."
  • Wrong date. The AI counts 60 days wrongly. Try: Say: "60 days before Dec 31 is Nov 1."
  • Interpreting the clause. The AI says what the contract means legally. Try: Say: "Quote only; no legal interpretation."
  • Getting markdown back. AI adds bold and headings by default, which show up as stray symbols where this is pasted. Try: Say "plain text, no bold, no headings, no asterisks".
  • Trusting the AI to count words. AI is bad at counting and usually runs long, so a vague "keep it short" lands well over the limit. Try: Cap each part instead of the total, for example "each line under 15 words".

What a strong prompt includes

  • Names the four lines
  • Refers to contracts team
  • Asks for plain text
